The article discusses the principles of the formation of Nikolay Gogol’s literary reputation on the material of events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Gogol’s birth in 2009. The problem of the existence of the image of a classic at the crossroads of two – Russian and Ukrainian – literary canons is actualized on the example of Gogol’s biographical and literary myths formed in the anniversary context. The article analyzes the material on the history and modernity of Gogol’s memorialization. On the one hand, monuments to Gogol of the pre-Revolutionary and Soviet eras are analyzed. Such monuments are interesting as objects with their intangible nature and symbolic meanings rather than as material objects. Around the monuments, there are stable plots of urban folklore, which are a kind of cultural memory. On the other hand, contemporary practices of Gogol’s monumentalization are considered. The mechanisms of preserving and creating Gogol’s reputation in the anniversary period through the forms of sculptural manifestation are traced. The material considered in the article allows distinguishing general typological and individual features of the sculptural canonization of Gogol in Russian and Ukrainian spaces. The unifying moment in the urban landscapes of both countries is the rejection of monumental sculpture in honor of the classic. Ensembles of urban street sculpture based on Gogol’s works are gaining popularity. This revealed tendency of the sculptural Gogoliana in the two national spaces finds expression in non-capital cities. The appearance of sculptural ensembles dedicated to Gogol’s characters and plots is associated with the complication and semantic saturation of local regional territories, their acquisition of their “Genius Loci”. This identified trend is associated with the inclusion of the Gogol text in the tourist urban text. A similar mechanism of canonization is aimed at creating a populariz-ing version of the classic. Individual features of the urban spaces of Russia and Ukraine are associated with the conditional division of Gogol’s works into two parts. Evenings and Mir-gorod semantize the Ukrainian space in accordance with the geographical logic of Gogol’s works. In Ukraine, the Central region is leading due to the Poltava region, and there is not a single monument in Western Ukraine. Petersburg Tales, The Inspector, and, possibly, Dead Souls are Russian. Moreover, Petersburg Tales are associated with the space of St. Peters-burg, and the comedy The Inspector with the cities claiming to be Khlestakov’s homeland: Saratov, Serdobsk, Penza, Ustyuzhna.
